9 SIMPLE RULES FOR ELUDING THE AUTHORITIES
(AKA STAYING ALIVE) FROM ELLIOTT CALHOUN

1. Avoid low density urban areas.

Think shopping malls and the suburbs. They have way too many cameras per square foot for the lack of places to hide. In ultra-dense urban sprawls, you can hide from facial recognition algorithms by being in the masses and keeping a low profile. Go to a mall, and you'll be treated to a friendly conversation with a holographic salesperson personalized to all your likes, while the police are notified and surround you.

2. Don't carry a mobile.

Cells, tablets—any mobile computer—means a steady signal. They need it to function, which means your position can be found. Remove the battery to ensure they're not silently listening to you. Or better yet ditch them altogether. It's not like there's a ton of people to call when you’re on the run anyway...

3. Stick with non-perishables.

You need food that is compact, lasts a long time, and delivers calories+proteins+nutrients in spades. Protein bars, granola, and the like may not be the most appetizing way to subsist, but eating anything seems pretty good when you're hungry and on the run.

4. Enjoy nature.

Meaning the woods make for a good place to hide out. Most areas have no cameras, it's difficult to image from above, and you aren't likely to encounter others as it's illegal to disturb natural habitats as legislated by the Woodland Wilds Protection Act of 2039.

5. Pack light.

Only take what you need to survive and choose things that are easy to pack. You never know when you'll have to make a run for it. Better not to leave behind evidence of where you were or miss bringing something you needed.

6. Find someone you trust.

It's hard being out there on the run. Doubly if you don't have someone to confide in and share the burden of toting supplies. Especially if you have to lug around old books your grandfather left you...

7. When someone shoots at you, don't trust that person.

No matter how many times they promise it was just an act. Also, avoid anyone with Agent anything as their job title. Or siegers. Or people trying to sell you raptor.

8. Breaking into buildings and cars with biometrics locks requires finesse.

Sometimes uploading replacement biometric data is easier than brute forcing them. It definitely triggers fewer alarms.

9. Always be looking over your shoulder.

The problem is paranoia proves itself right too often. In a world where everything you know to be right can be made into a lie and you're powerless to stop it, people do terrible things. Terrible things to save themselves, even if it means sacrificing a friend to do it. I know, it's happened to me too often.

Summary

In A.D. 2039, a prodigious seventeen year old, Elliott, is assigned to work on a global soft-ware initiative his deceased grandfather helped found. Project Alexandria is intended to provide the entire world secure and equal access to all accumulated human knowledge. All forms of print are destroyed in good faith, to ensure everyone has equal footing, and Elliott knows he must soon part with his final treasure: a book of Shakespeare’s complete works gifted him by his grandfather. Before it is destroyed, Elliott notices something is amiss with the book, or rather Project Alexandria. The two do not match, including an extra sonnet titled “Day Moon”. When Elliott investigates, he uncovers far more than he bargained for. There are sinister forces backing Project Alexandria who have no intention of using it for its public purpose. Elliott soon finds himself on the run from federal authorities and facing betrayals and deceit from those closest to him. Following clues left by his grandfather, with agents close at hand, Elliott desperately hopes to find a way to stop Project Alexandria. All of history past and yet to be depend on it.

About the Author

Brett Armstrong has been exploring other worlds as a writer since age nine. Years later, he still writes, but now invites others along on his excursions. He’s shown readers hauntingly sorrowful historical fiction (Destitutio Quod Remissio), scary-real dystopian sci-fi (Day Moon and Veiled Sun), and dark, sweeping epic fantasy (Quest of Fire). Where he heads next is as much a discovery for him as readers. Through dark, despair, light, joy, and everything in between, the end is always meant to leave his fellow literary explorers with wonder and hope.
