Summary

In a rich fantasy world where Songs literally move heaven and earth, one sister must use magic and the other must rely on strength to reunite when pirates, greed, and war tear them away from each other.

Miren has never allowed jealousy of her sister’s magic keep her from taking care of Kesia, and Kesia has always depended on her big sister. When Kesia is kidnapped, Miren will do anything to get her back—even team up with her sister’s aristocratic and seemingly ineffectual boyfriend. Neither sister had ever left their small fishing village before, and now they are plunged into the wider world, minor players in a war between nations. Each sister faces external and internal perils, and each finds surprising allies and unexpected strengths. How will the two find each other again? And what will become of them if they don’t succeed?

My Review

DIVIDED FIRE is a story of two sisters who have been separated and how they fight to survive their way back to each other. Likable characters, an intriguing fantasy world, and an engaging plot make for an entertaining read from beginning to end. Recommended to fantasy fans!

I appreciated how the author unfolded this fantasy world as the story moved forward and as the characters discovered their world. I really dislike info dumps and this story did not have that issue. I loved how this story began and how it immersed me right into this world. I liked Miren from the start. Kesia and Davri steadily grew on me. I also felt like the author did a really great job in each sister having her own distinct voice. I never had issues knowing which POV was which. There was a hint of romance, but that was it. This also isn't a page-turner as the pace is is fairly even with some climatic moments here and there and an intense ending. The plot was steady and I would describe this story as a solid read. I would have liked a wider picture of the world, war, and reasoning behind it all, so there definitely could be more books, but I felt this works on its own as well.

In the end, was it what I wished for? I enjoyed reading this and am definitely planning to pick up this author's next book. If you're looking for a steady, solid fantasy, then I'd recommend this one.

Content: Some violence and torture, but clean.
