My Review
THE SLOW MARCH OF LIGHT is a story of great perseverance set during the cold war in Germany. A German woman and an American soldier find themselves in danger as they try to do what they feel is right. An inspiring story for inspirational historical fiction fans.
I really liked how the author introduced the two main characters and how relatable they each were. Their friendship felt authentic as did their fears and challenges. The story slowly builds with some climatic moments when these characters face great difficulties and rely on their faith with bravery to persevere. I really liked the historical excerpts at the beginning of the chapters that were quite informative. The ending is a bit predictable, but I didn't know exactly what would happen and how these characters were get there.
My only complaint is that I would have liked the story to be more of an experience instead of being told the story so much. You can definitely feel a message being shared through the story and I wanted that to be a bit more subtle. Things also didn't always feel natural to the characters or situation... maybe a bit to cleaned up.
In the end, was it what I wished for? This is definitely a story that is well worth the read. It's a book with likable characters, an intriguing plot and an inspiring story.
Content: Some violence including torture and shootings (not overly gruesome).
Source: I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, which did not require a positive review. All opinions are my own.
