Excerpt from The Certain Hope
Thursday, before meeting Luke, Tara ate lunch with Shelli and Olivia. Neither one had taken a breath since they’d joined her. She concentrated on the spicy chicken sandwich she’d prepared last night. Savoring each bite while the sisters gabbed, Tara tuned into the conservation when Olivia named co-workers she said were undatable. Shelli switched subjects to an upcoming holiday.
“Memorial Day’s coming. Olivia, did you—”
“Hush. I was talking.” While Olivia chewed a tater tot, smug eyes focused on Tara. “Luke probably broke up with the woman he’s dated for five years. But she wasn’t his girlfriend, or so he claimed. You aren’t his usual type. I can’t wait until he sees you in person.”
Tara shuddered. Vegetables fell onto her lap. She laid her fork on the table, then pushed aside her half-eaten sandwich.
I may look ordinary, but I treat people right. You never have.
Shelli rolled her eyes at Olivia before smiling at Tara. “Luke has always dated the wrong women. Rick explained he did the same thing in high school. We both agree he needs someone grounded in his life; like you.”
The backhanded compliment annoyed Tara. Yesterday she’d suppressed the urge to cancel the date. But today’s lunch with these two placed her back into retreat mode. Her friends’ opinions and her anxiety had been troublesome enough. Olivia’s rudeness forced Tara to reconsider going. Again.
Still, she refused to bail at the last minute. Besides, it would feel good to get out of the house, regardless of why it happened. The old home she loved was filled with nostalgic and sorrowful memories. Both of her parents had died agonizing deaths at home.

About the Author
E. C. Jackson began her writing career with the full-length play Pajama Party. Thirty-one years later, she adapted the play into Pajama Party: The Story, a companion book to the second book in the five-book standalone Hope series.
Jackson’s favorite pastime is reading fiction. She enjoys taking the journey along with the characters in the books. That also led to her unorthodox approach to story writing. Her vision for each book she writes is to immerse readers into the storyline so they become connected with each character.
